Mentr is a small app, made by a student, that connects students of Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) who need help with a course to students who did well in it. This note says what the app stores about you, why, who can see it, and how to get rid of it. It is short on purpose.
Who is responsible
Mentr is run by Alexandros Kalligas, who is the controller of your data under the GDPR. Mentr is not part of TU/e, and TU/e has no access to the app's data. Your TU/e email address is used only to check that you belong to the university.

What Mentr stores
- Account: your TU/e email address, whether it is verified, and your password, which is stored only as a hash by our hosting provider. Nobody at Mentr can read it.
- Profile: the display name, study year and program you enter, a short bio and a photo if you add one.
- Tutor listings: the courses you offer help with, the grade you enter for each (self-reported), whether you were a teaching assistant, a short text, and whether the listing is paused.
- Requests: the message you send when you ask a tutor for help, and what became of it.
- Chats: the messages you exchange, when they were delivered and read, and whether you deleted a chat.
- Sessions: meetings you logged, whether the other person confirmed them, and the resulting counts on your profile and listings.
- Grade checks: whether you said a tutor showed you their grade in Osiris (matched, did not match, or did not check).
- Reports and blocks: reports you file, with the reason and details you give, and the people you block.
- Notifications: a push token that identifies your device to the notification service, so the app can tell you about requests, messages and sessions.
- Technical records: our hosting provider keeps the IP address, device type and time of each login session, and short-lived request logs, for security and to find bugs. Server logs of the app's own code may contain your user id and error messages.
- On your phone only: your light or dark mode choice and whether you finished the walkthrough. These never leave the device.
Please do not put health, religion, political views or other sensitive details in your bio or messages. Mentr is not built to protect such data.
Why
- To run the service you asked for (GDPR article 6(1)(b)): everything above except moderation exists so that you can find, contact and meet other students.
- Legitimate interest in a safe community (article 6(1)(f)): reviewing reports, enforcing blocks, keeping a deleted account's messages readable for the other person, preventing abuse, and fixing bugs.
Mentr contains no advertising, analytics or tracking software. Nothing is used for profiling, and nothing is sold or passed on for other people's purposes.
Who can see what
- Every verified Mentr user: your display name, study year, program, bio and photo; your tutor listings with grade, teaching-assistant flag and text; your counts of confirmed sessions; and the number of students who confirmed they saw your grade.
- Only the two people involved: requests, chats and messages, delivery and read receipts, and logged sessions.
- Only you: your grade-check answers and your block list. A person you block is not told.
- The developer: reports (who filed them, about whom, and why), and, through the database console, all of the above when that is needed to review a report, help you with a problem or fix a bug. Nobody else has access.
Profile photos are served from a link that opens without a login. The link is shown only inside the app and cannot be guessed.
Where it is kept, and who helps
- Appwrite Cloud (privacy policy) hosts the database, files, logins and the emails for verification and password reset. Mentr uses Appwrite's Frankfurt region, so this data stays in Germany.
- Expo (privacy policy), a company in the United States, delivers push notifications. When you are notified, the notification's title and text, for example the sender's name and the start of a message, and your device token pass through Expo's servers and then through Apple's or Google's notification service. This is the one place where data leaves the European Union. Expo relies on the EU's standard contractual clauses for that transfer.
No other company receives your data.
How long
- Everything is kept for as long as your account exists, except what you remove yourself: edits to your profile and listings replace the old values, and a chat you delete is hidden for you at once. Its messages are removed from the server once both people have deleted the chat, unless an open report refers to it.
- Login sessions last until you log out, or until you use "Log out on all devices". Your push token is removed when you log out.
Deleting your account
Profile → Settings → Delete my account removes, at once: your profile and photo, your listings and their grade-seen counts, your grade-check answers and those about you, your requests, your blocks, your push token and your login.
Three things stay. Messages you sent stay visible to the other person, marked "Deleted account" and no longer linked to you. Sessions you confirmed keep counting for the other person, with your name removed. Reports you filed or that were filed about you are kept so that patterns of abuse can still be reviewed. Our hosting provider may hold encrypted backups for a limited time afterwards.
Your rights
You can see and change your profile and listings in the app, and delete your account there. For everything else under the GDPR, including a copy of your data, a correction the app does not let you make, or an objection to the processing described above, email the address at the top. You will get an answer within a month.
If you think Mentr handles your data wrongly, you can complain to the Dutch supervisory authority, the Autoriteit Persoonsgegevens.
Age
Mentr is for university students and staff. You must be at least 16 to use it.
Changes
When the app starts storing something new, this note is updated and the date at the top changes. A change that matters to you is announced in the app.
